Message from the Citizens for Peace to Ingrid Betancourt (English version)
Ingrid, we are really happy about your freedom and wish you all the best for the future.
We noticed, in your first speeches after your liberation, a strong wish to do something for all the people in the world who are enduring the same situation as the one you endured. We also heard your exemplary messages of inner and outer peace : you are genuinely free because you are free of hatred as you said it yourself.
You also said that you wanted to build another world. We too, we aspire to a different world.
We know that outer peace is achieved through inner peace and that we should all try, in our everyday life and according to our own capacity, to develop peace and compassion, and to get rid of hatred and resentment.
A huge international movement for peace added to an improved individual attitude of each of us could for sure contribute to a better world.
We, the undersigned, are ordinary citizens who care a lot about the promotion of peace and freedom. We are convinced that things can change for a more democratic and peaceful world.
But for this, we need famous people, “peace ambassadors” . You are well known and can therefore be heard. We think that today, it is the good moment to do something. We would like that the burst of solidarity and enthusiasm which accompanies your story could serve other peace and freedom causes.
If you could gather together other well known peace men and women for a big humanist, non-political and non-religious movement, whose aim would be the promotion of peace and freedom, we sign today to tell you that we would support such a project.
